Decompression Zone

Mindfulness is the skill of being in the moment and experiencing what is happening right now without judgement. Developing the skill of mindfulness can help to increase your ability to concentrate and pay attention. It can also help you better navigate the ups and downs of life.

Mindful Makers and Doers Club (MMDC) invites you to make a habit of switching off after work through mindful making and doing activities. By spending 15-30 minutes on mindfully getting out of the 9 to 5 mindset, you mentally prepare yourself to fully engage in hobbies and personal commitments in your 5 to 9 time.

This is your go-to place to discover interesting ways to switch off and learn mindfulness through simple hands-on activities. Try doing the activities on this page sometime between when you leave your workplace and when you start getting stuck into your after-work hobbies and personal commitments.

Every month, 2 new activities are featured here and in the Activity Library

Activities to try in November

Have a laugh

You can boost your mood, reduce stress, and enhance your overall health with a good belly laugh. Instead of mindlessly losing yourself in a funny film or a Netflix stand-up comedy special, try a 2 minute laughter yoga exercise.

Simulate laughter by making loud and deep "ho ho" and "ha ha" sounds for 2 minutes. It may feel awkward at first but eventually, you might find yourself genuinely laughing.

Go on a mindful stroll

Walking is a great way to look after your body and mind.

Try keeping yourself in the present moment  by describing what's happening around you in your head. "Narrate" your walk as if you were giving an audio description of a movie scene.

If you notice yourself thinking about about things waiting for you at your destination, shift your attention to naming 3 things you can see, hear and feel.

Who updates this page?

I'm Trish - founder of Mindful Makers and Doers Club.

Mindfulness is a valuable skill for navigating the ups and downs of life. Meditation is just one of the many ways to practice mindfulness.

As a meditation teacher, I'm on a mission to show that meditation - the practice of focusing your attention in a particular way - doesn't have to be about sitting still with eyes closed. I help people look beyond traditional meditation methods and discover hands-on ways to practice mindfulness without the “woo-woo stuff”.

I'm also passionate about making mindfulness accessible to more people. I advocate the concept of "equitable mindfulness" by teaching secular techniques that cater to different needs and preferences, as well as budgets and schedules.  â€‹â€‹â€‹
